TEMPE — Freshman quarterback Jake Fette made his Arizona State debut against FBS competition on Saturday, replacing Cutter Boley who had previously replaced the injured starter, Mikey Keene.
After Boley replaced Keene late in the first half, his first three second-half drives totaled just 19 yards on 10 plays with completions on just one of his five attempts (seven yards). ASU then turned to the highly touted freshman.
ASU’s offense immediately had a different energy, as freshman running back Cardae Mack ran the ball on the first three plays for 40 yards. When Fette attempted his first pass, it was a nine-yard completion out of play action.

Fette is the most mobile quarterback on ASU’s roster, which could help him deal with the offensive line’s inconsistencies. He showed off the mobility with a scramble for positive yardage on the next play.
The Sun Devils punctuated the drive with Cardae Mack’s third touchdown of the day to take a 21-17 lead early in the fourth quarter, scoring on a 12-yard run after his first two scores of nine and one yard, respectively.
Mack would score one more time, an 11-yard rush that made it 28-17 with 6:23 left.
Fette had appeared in minimal action against Morgan State in the opener.
Mikey Keene’s first ASU start comes to abrupt end
Keene was hit by a rolling defender and exited Saturday’s game late in the first half. Boley filled in for the final few plays of the half, and he remained out there to begin the second half.
Keene had replaced Boley at halftime of the Sun Devils’ previous game against Texas Tech before getting his first ASU start on Saturday.
In the first half of his first start, Keene had 160 yards on 10 of 19 passing against a Kansas State defense that was averaging 136.3 passing yards per game (first in Big 12) entering the contest.
After completing a 51-yard pass on his first offensive play, Keene led two ASU scoring drives that were both capped off by Mack rushing touchdowns to enter halftime with a 14-10 lead.
