The Arizona Cardinals announced Thursday that cornerback Garrett Williams has been activated from the physically unable to perform list.
Williams’ activation comes as he works his way back from a torn Achilles tendon he suffered last December.
Williams was one of four players who opened the Cardinals’ training camp on the PUP list. The others were outside linebacker Josh Sweat, tight end Tip Reiman and offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. While Johnson has been activated, Sweat and Reiman remain on the PUP list.
The activation of Williams, arguably Arizona’s top cornerback, provides a boost to the Cardinals’ defense. He has played in 35 games across three seasons, registering 84 tackles with 16 passes defensed and four interceptions.
Williams looks to slot in as the top nickel on the team alongside veteran Sean Murphy-Bunting. Will Johnson, Denzel Burke and Max Melton slot in as some of the top outside cornerback options.
Head coach Mike LaFleur told reporters in June that Williams “for sure” had a chance to play in Week 1.
Williams is set to begin his fourth season with the Cardinals as he seeks a contract extension. Arizona picked up the fifth-year option on his contract this offseason, which will keep him with the team through 2027.
