Cardinals’ Will Johnson in danger of missing rest of season with neck injury

TEMPE — Arizona Cardinals cornerback Will Johnson could potentially miss the rest of the season with a neck injury, according to head coach Mike LaFleur.

LaFleur added he doesn’t believe Johnson will need surgery.

“You’re sick for Will for obvious reasons, the person over the player,” LaFleur said Monday. “And then his teammates are sick for him, too. But it’s ball and we move on.”

Johnson was seen heading to the locker room late in Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks. His last play of the game came with 5:43 left in the fourth quarter. It’s unclear when he was injured.

In two starts this season, Johnson recorded eight tackles, a pass defensed and a fumble recovery as Arizona’s CB1.

With him potentially out the rest of the way, the Cardinals are now forced to lean on their depth at cornerback even more.

Names that quickly come to mind include Kei’Trel Clark and Starling Thomas V.

“I thought we had a deep cornerbacks room and here we are in Week 3,” LaFleur said. “Star’s played a lot of football here. Star’s played good football, and I think Star’s in a good spot head space-wise and physically.”

Kalen King, D’Shawn Jamison and Art Green are other options either on the 53-man roster or practice squad.

And if anything else, Garrett Williams’ return to the starting lineup can’t come soon enough.

Additionally, cornerback Max Melton is considered day to day with a foot injury suffered in Sunday’s loss.
