Cardinals’ Carson Beck focused on progress, not QB1 chatter

Arizona Cardinals rookie Carson Beck understands the territory he’s currently in.

Taken in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft not long after Arizona moved on from former franchise quarterback Kyler Murray, it’s not hard putting two and two together.

There’s a long-term void at starting quarterback, and Beck currently personifies the most realistic option on the roster with Gardner Minshew II and Jacoby Brissett serving as bridge signal-callers.

But while the chatter centers around when — not if — Beck starts in 2026, he isn’t getting ahead of himself.

“I think it’s easy to look down the road. It’s easy to want certain things without putting the work in behind the scenes and focusing on the little things that you have to do right to be able to actually get into that position,” Beck told Arizona Sports’ Cardinals Corner on Friday. “But you can miss out on the opportunity. So, having that mindset is important.”

“The biggest thing for me is, how can I be the best Carson Beck that I can be? The best version of Carson Beck that when an opportunity or my name is called on that I’m ready for that and that I can ultimately have success and put my best foot forward,” he added. “Ultimately, at the end of the day, the goal is to win. That’s what football is about. … Whatever I have to do to … help our team do that and whatever role that might be is what I’m here to do.”

Beck has been slow rolled early into his Cardinals tenure as he gets his NFL bearings. Throughout organized team activities and minicamp, he was seen working with the third-team offense more times than not as he nails down head coach Mike LaFleur’s system, the cadence and getting back under center, something he hadn’t done since his days at Georgia.

Even for Beck, who brings with him plenty of college experience (55 games played), it’s been an adjustment. But it is one that Beck has embraced as he continues to pick up nuggets of info to add to his toolbelt.

“I’d say the most different/interesting thing is just the playbook. Just the volume of what it is. It’s been fun, though. It stimulates my mind,” Beck said. “It’s the side of the game that I love and appreciate.

“It’s the chess match that goes into it that I don’t know if a lot of football fans and viewers really understand how much goes into it as far as the preparation standpoint, the studying standpoint, understanding the playbook and what you’re trying to do against certain defenses.”

As of Friday, there’s no telling when Beck might find his way into the starting lineup. For now, it’s about building up that foundation for when that time does come.
