TEMPE — Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Carson Beck hasn’t seen much preseason action as he deals with rib discomfort from his Hall of Fame game showing.

From the sounds of it, there’s a good chance that continues Friday against the Green Bay Packers following Beck’s throwing session last week.

“Good with the throwing session, still TBD in terms of what this Friday will look like,” head coach Mike LaFleur said Monday.

Beck continues to be a nonparticipant at practice ever since he was pulled back due to the discomfort. That will likely be the case during Arizona’s joint practice with Green Bay.

The extent of his workload during the open portion of practices has been underhand lobbing footballs to teammates and chatting with the coaching staff.

For a rookie who could use the added reps, especially with Jacoby Brissett getting the nod to start the season, it’s a tough development for the young signal caller.

But as we’ve already seen this preseason, injuries are a part of the game.

“It’s easy to magnify the quarterback position and (being a) rookie and all that kind of stuff,” LaFleur said. “You get better at football by practicing and playing football. When you’re not out there, it’s hard to get better, right? He’s missed some days, but that’s no different than the nose guard. That’s no different than the receiver.

“That’s no different than the left tackle, particularly for the younger guys. It is what it is. … He’s a tough dude. He battled through it for three or four practices before the discomfort became so real that it just wasn’t worth it (for him to practice) because it wasn’t going to improve until we gave him a little bit of time.”

When he wasn’t injured, Beck gave Cardinals fans plenty to cheer for in his preseason debut against the Carolina Panthers.

He finished with 188 yards and a one touchdown on 15-of-19 passing and showed plenty of poise and confidence running an NFL offense in a game setting for the first time.

You say that like that's a bad thing...

I played SS in college (D2). Def played with bruised ribs and it hurts to high heavens. Its a pain tolerance injury. Many NFL/College players play with bruised ribs, with the exception of the more severe version.

Beck was clearly moving and throwing well in the days after the injury (Red/White scrim) and we are two weeks removed from that.

He needs the reps and the odds of making it worse are low.

Dude, have you ever had just a simple rib bruise injury? It hurts to high heaven to take deep breaths or even breathe rapidly. You want him to play and "if he takes a hard hit get him out and then sit him down and let him heal"? If that hit takes him out for months, that's OK?? What if it's something more like a stress fracture with even more severe pathology?
