The Arizona Cardinals signed cornerback Jaylon Jones and offensive lineman Royce Newman to one-year contracts, the team announced Friday.

The money behind the deals were not disclosed.

Jones is coming off his third season with the Chicago Bears where he recorded 15 tackles and two passes defensed across eight games played (one start). His season was cut short due to a shoulder injury picked up in a loss to Arizona in Week 9.

He was used primarily as a special teamer in his last two years in Chicago.

Jones got his NFL start as an undrafted free agent with the Bears in 2022 after playing college ball at Ole Miss.

His most productive season came as a rookie, recording 47 tackles, two passes defensed and a forced fumble.

He now joins a cornerbacks room that is highlighted by Garrett Williams, Max Melton, Sean Murphy-Bunting and Starling Thomas V. Elijah Jones is also expected to compete after missing all of his rookie season.

Jones already has a familiar face in the building having playing high school football in Allen, Texas, with Arizona’s franchise quarterback Kyler Murray.

Royce Newman signs with Cardinals

Newman is coming off one game played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season.

Before that, he spent three seasons with the Green Bay Packers. He appeared in 52 games and made 24 starts.

The lineman has seen more snaps at guard during his NFL career but has shown the versatility to play outside if needed.

He entered the league as a fourth-round pick (No. 142 overall) for Green Bay in 2021.

Newman joins an offensive line room highlighted by Paris Johnson Jr., Evan Brown and Isaiah Adams.

I think our secondary is one of the units that is much more promising than its PFF ranking indicates. The three young corners made some dumb mistakes born of inexperience from time to time, but they all seemed to noticeably improve as the season went on. There were some games in the second half of the year that those young dudes had it on lock down. SMB is inconsistent, but does provide a bit of experience in the corps.

I am betting this group takes another step forward this year. I feel pretty confident that the FA money can be spent elsewhere...like maybe LB Monti??????
