Mike LaFleur: Jacoby Brissett playing ‘well,’ accuracy has been ‘dynamite’
Brissett completed 24 of his 35 pass attempts for 218 yards after throwing for 292 yards and three touchdowns last week against the Detroit Lions.

The Arizona Cardinals put together one of the best wins of the NFL season so far on Sunday, and quarterback Jacoby Brissett delivered another strong performance.
While the quarterback’s box score doesn’t look the flashiest, with an interception and no touchdowns thrown, head coach Mike LaFleur was impressed by the veteran.
“I thought Jacoby played the position well,” LaFleur told Arizona Sports’ Burns & Gambo on Monday. “I feel like the last few weeks, his accuracy has just been dynamite. I mean, he’s been putting it right where he wants it.”
Brissett completed 24 of his 35 pass attempts for 218 yards after throwing for 292 yards and three touchdowns last week against the Detroit Lions.
As for the 33-year-old’s interception against the Rams, his head coach shouldered the blame for that.
“I’m killing myself on that first pick because that’s just going to the same play too often right there. So, put that on me,” LaFleur said. “(Quentin) Lake undercuts it. Good play by a smart football player there. So, not good from a schematic standpoint.”
Though Arizona won, the Cardinals would have liked to get into the end zone a bit more often on Sunday. Scoring five field goals on five red zone trips isn’t a recipe for success going forward.
LaFleur said that was more about the run game in that area, however, and pointed to a couple key drops in the fourth quarter that forced the Cardinals to punt rather than an opportunity to build a larger lead.
“We had two third down drops there that hopefully — we shouldn’t have even probably been in the situation we were in there at the end — (Brissett) puts a dot on Jalen (Brooks) and a dot on Kendrick (Bourne) and those guys can make those plays, obviously,” LaFleur said. “Then the red zone, we just weren’t as efficient, particularly in the run game, as we were kind of from the 20 to the 20.”
“We know that’s not sustainable to kick that many field goals and win football games. Field goals get you beat in this league, but we know how we can fix that.”
What is Carson Beck’s status?
The longer Brissett plays well and/or the Cardinals win, the longer the wait becomes for rookie Carson Beck.
LaFleur confirmed Monday there has been no change in the quarterback depth chart as of now, but did say Beck is getting better at practice.
“He is getting better. He’s obviously got a lot of reps throughout the week,” LaFleur said. “We do about 36 reps on Wednesday, 36 on Thursday and 22 or so on Fridays and he gets a little over half of that or half of that. And he’s progressing. He’s doing a great job. He’s obviously attentive in meetings and all those kind of things.
“So, like where he’s at and then in terms of being the third (quarterback) right now, no changes there.”
