Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold will be out for Seattle’s Week 2 game against the Arizona Cardinals with the same injury that took him out of Week 1 against the New England Patriots last Wednesday.

Initially thought to be a hip injury, it has since been specifically described as a glute injury, with Seattle seeking up to four second opinions, according to Fox’s Jay Glazer. Surgery is not expected to be required.

The timetable for Darnold’s recovery isn’t exactly clear, with NBC’s Mike Florio reporting it to be in the 4-6 week range, but NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reporting that returning for Week 3 against the Washington Commanders is still potentially in play.

But what is guaranteed is that he will not play against the Cardinals in Week 2 this Sunday, Sept. 20, as it is expected Darnold will be listed as out once the first injury report of the week is released by Seattle. It could be a huge benefit for Arizona against the defending-champion NFC West rival, and coming off an upset win in Week 1 at the Los Angeles Chargers.

Six-year veteran Drew Lock is expected to fill in as Seattle’s quarterback in place of Darnold, with second-year quarterback Jalen Milroe also an option. Lock is 10-18 in games he’s started across stints with the Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Seahawks.

Lock threw for 187 yards and a touchdown while completing 16-of-22 passes en route to a 13-10 comeback win over the Patriots in relief of Darnold in Week 1.
