Cardinals sign veteran WR Steven Sims with injuries ravaging position group

The Arizona Cardinals signed veteran wide receiver and return man Steven Sims to the practice squad on Tuesday, adding depth to an injury-ravaged position group.

Sims, 28, has played 53 NFL games since making his debut in 2019 with Washington. He has since spent time with Pittsburgh, Houston and Baltimore.

Sims played nine games last season between the Texans and Ravens, but he only spent 10 snaps on the field offensively. His role was to return punts and kickoffs. He averaged 27.9 yards per kick return on seven tries, and 5.8 yards per punt return on 21 attempts.

The 5-foot-10 target has 78 career receptions for 704 yards and five touchdowns.

The Cardinals placed wide receiver and kick returner Greg Dortch on injured reserve ahead of Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Rams. Wide receiver Zay Jones previously suffered a season-ending torn Achilles, while a heel injury kept Marvin Harrison Jr. out on Sunday.

Fellow receiver Xavier Weaver missed Sunday’s game with a hamstring issue.

With Michael Wilson and Andre Baccellia the only healthy receivers on the active roster, Arizona had to promote Trent Sherfield and Jalen Brooks from the practice squad, with Brooks taking over as the kick returner.

Sims becomes another option in the return game.

The Cardinals take on Sims’ former team, the Texans, on Sunday in Houston.
