TEMPE — Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Walter Nolen III’s rookie season did not go as planned.
When he was on the field for six games, Nolen was a game-wrecker. But it was the 11 games missed that overshadowed his rookie year.
Relegated to the sideline due to injury, all the good the 16th overall pick put on tape almost felt canceled out by his inability to stay healthy.
“I’m taking every day as a blessing. Last year was a real wake-up call for me that the sport can be taken away at any time,” Nolen said Monday. “So, I’ve just been taking it day by day.”
“There are pros and cons to being hurt,” the lineman added. “I feel like it’s all about how you attack your rehab. I already had the thought in my head that I wanted to be the best coming back from rehab. So just putting in the work every day and it led to now.”

His reaction to that wake-up call has been noticeable throughout training camp and the preseason.
Among the biggest changes Nolen made this offseason was his diet. He’s clearly trimmed down but still has plenty of the bulk needed to go back and forth in the trenches.
The burst and overall speed? Even more prominent.
“He is a presence. He both has a lot of moves and has a lot of power as well,” center Hjalte Froholdt said. “I’ve been stoked to see what Walt’s gone through this camp. He’s matured so much. He starts acting like a vet. He walks around like he’s relaxed. … It’s good to see him out there and he loves ball.”
That switch up in eating paired with where he’s at physically and mentally could be a real game changer into Nolen’s ascension.
If anything, those factors should only help the self-proclaimed “heartbeat of the defense” that much more.
“Wholeheartedly, I feel like it starts with us (along the interior), especially talking about my position. I feel like I’m the heartbeat of the defense a lot of times.
“When I’m on the field, things move a little bit differently. So as long as I’m out there, I feel like we’re going to kick ass.”
Arizona is certainly hoping for that to come to fruition, especially with Calais Campbell’s departure in free agency and the lack of consistent pass-rushing depth on the roster.
If this defense is actually going to take the much-needed steps forward in 2026 and beyond, Nolen must be a part of the weekly equation.

Walter Nolen 3 (games a season)
The kid has to stay on the field. That's the only thing that matters. Everything else is just window dressing.
I like his optimism, let's just hope it plays out on the field every week.
