PHOENIX – The Arizona Diamondbacks’ franchise record 13-game winning streak came to an end on Friday night, and they, unfortunately, moved on to a different kind of streak.

A ninth inning rally by the Padres gave San Diego an 8-7 game and series victory against the D-backs with two wins in a row at Chase Field. The Arizona bullpen allowed six runs in the ninth, wasting what was a dominant outing from Zack Godley.

Godley seemed invincible to the opposition early on. After giving up a single to the first batter of the game – who was thrown out trying to turn it into a double – Godley sat down 16 in row before a wild pitch strikeout gave the Padres their first true base runner of the game in the 6th inning.

Godley’s only mistakes came in the seventh inning when he allowed a double to Yangervis Solarte, which was followed by a Wil Meyers two-RBI home run. He also gave up a double to Cory Spangenberg before finishing the inning with a strikeout of Javari Blash before ending his day.

Godley lasted seven strong innings for Arizona, giving up four hits and two earned runs. He struck out nine and didn’t walk any batters.

Meanwhile, the D-backs bats were hot against the Padres and they did not rely on Paul Goldschmidt returning to the lineup to pick them up. Daniel Descalso was productive in annoying starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin all night long. Descalso went 2-for-2 at the plate with a single, a solo home run, and a pair of walks.

Daniel Descalso was productive in annoying starting pitcher Jhoulys Chacin all night long. Descalso went 2-for-2 at the plate with a single, a solo home run, and a pair of walks.

David Peralta and Chris Iannetta also had productive nights at the dish. The Freight Train went 2-for-5 with three RBI, and C.I. was 2-for-4 with a RBI. Goldy also contributed with a RBI single on a 1-for-4 night.

Chacin went 5 innings for the Padres, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

In that ninth inning, things fell apart for the D-backs.

After a Solarte single, Wil Meyers added a late two-run home run, his second dinger of the day, off of Andrew Chafin.

No worry, though, as closer Fernando Rodney was coming on and had been on fire since early July.

Rodney too, however, ran into trouble. He struck out Spangenberg but walked Blash and gave up a double to Austin Hedges, scoring Blash and making it 7-5.

Rodney then allowed three singles in a row to Erick Aybar, Manuel Margot, and Carlos Asuaje. To make matters worse, an error by left fielder David Peralta on a routine play caused Asuaje’s single to score two runs instead of one. The significance of that error was high, as it gave the Padres an 8-7 lead instead of the hit tying the game.

The drama wasn’t over yet, as the D-backs loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to finish off the crazy roller coaster of an inning with a win. Ketel Marte struck out, ending what was a stunning inning and game.

THE GOOD

– In his last three starts, Godley is 2-0 with a 3.32 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 19 innings pitched.

– In his last 10 games, Descalso is hitting .357 with 2 doubles, 3 home runs, 8 RBI, and 4 walks.

– Iannetta has hit safely in 10 of his last 11 starts and has reached base safely in 17 of his last 18 games.

– J.D. Martinez had four singles, raising his batting average on the year to .264.

– Godley struck out at least one batter in every inning he pitched. The stat line doesn’t reflect how dominant he was in this one.

THE BAD

– The ninth inning. Chafin and Rodney only got a combined one hitter out and gave up six runs.

– Both Iannetta and Martinez were thrown out when trying to turn a single into a double.

– Jake Lamb is still stuck under 100 RBI. He is currently at 98. He didn’t have any RBI tonight, going 0-for-4 at the plate. He only has two RBI in the month of September, and the last time he had back-to-back games with RBI was August 17-18.

STAT OF THE GAME

.667 – The Padres batters went 6-for-9 in the ninth inning with a walk, four singles, a double, and a home run while getting six RBI and producing more offense in one inning than they did the entire game.

HE SAID IT

Torey Lovullo on where this loss rates in comparison to other bad losses this season: “We’ve had about three or four that have kept me up all night. This one…I’ll let you know tomorrow, so stand by. That’s what makes baseball such a beautiful game. We did everything we possibly could to put ourselves in a position to win this game, and we didn’t. And it’s frustrating. And we got to figure out a way to accept what happened, know why it happened, and be ready to move on as quickly as we possibly can.”

NOTED

– The D-backs’ 82 wins through 142 games is the third most in club history.

– For the first time in club history, five pitchers – Zack Greinke, Godley, Robbie Ray, Taijuan Walker, and Patrick Corbin – have tallied at least 120 strikeouts in a season.

– Lovullo has been watching relief pitcher Jimmie Sherfy for longer than you think. Since tenth grade, in fact. Lovullo revealed before the game that Sherfy was on the same high school team in California as his son Nick.

UP NEXT

The D-backs look to avoid the sweep in game three of the series on Sunday with Ray on the mound against Luis Perdomo for the Padres. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning 40 minutes earlier on ESPN 620 AM.

Perdomo is 7-9 this season for the Padres with a 4.62 ERA. In nine games in his career against the D-backs, he is 3-3 with a 5.57 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 32.1 innings pitched.

Ray (12-5, 2.80 ERA) has been lights out since returning from his injury. He is 3-0 in his last three starts with a 0.93 ERA, 33 strikeouts, and an opponent’s batting average of .085. He only walked four batters in those starts.
