On Saturday, UFC president Dana White revealed plans for what will become known as the most anticipated fight card in mixed martial arts history.
Appearing on ESPN’s SportsCenter, White announced the rematch of the historic UFC 162 main event between newly crowned UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva had been made official for UFC 168 on December 28 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
“I completely expect a totally different fight this time,” said White, who went on to say Silva was hungry to reclaim his place atop the 185-pound division and avenge his only loss under the UFC banner.
“My fans in the UFC and my fans in the world and the United States, December 28 I go back to fight, Weidman and Silva,” said Silva in a clip played by ESPN. “I’m back. Trust me, I’m back.”
But while the rematch between the greatest champion the sport has ever known and the first man to defeat him in more than seven years will surely be the most talked about fight on the card, it is the co-main event is what will send UFC 168 into the records books.
Originally scheduled to headline the end of the year event, the UFC women’s bantamweight championship between rivals Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate will now be bumped to co-main.
