A look back at every battle in Seattle for Bruce Arians’ Cardinals

CenturyLink Field has been a safe haven for the Seattle Seahawks. That is, unless they’re playing the Arizona Cardinals.

Maybe it’s an anomaly that the Cardinals have gone 3-1 in Seattle under head coach Bruce Arians. Certainly, the road success Arizona has found in the Pacific Northwest coincides with the fact that the team has generally been pretty good the past four seasons.

So when Arians called the Seahawks’ home turf the Cardinals’ own in a postgame pep talk this Sunday, he wasn’t just riling up an intra-division rivalry. He was speaking truth.

The other truth is that Seattle’s home stadium not only produced a Guinness Book of World Record for the loudest sports venue in the world in 2013 — the Seahawks have used that to win, going 30-9 at home in the regular season since 2013.

Twice during Arians’ tenure, Arizona handed Seattle its only home loss for the season.

Here is a refresher for every Cardinals-Seahawks matchup since Arians took over as Arizona head coach.

2013

The context: Seattle had won 11 of its first 12 games before tripping up in Week 14 against the San Francisco 49ers. Pete Carroll’s team rebounded with a 23-0 win over the New York Giants before hosting a 9-5 Arizona team in Week 16. The Cardinals were coming off a 37-34 overtime win over Tennessee.

Result: The Cardinals won 17-10, moving to 10-5 on the year.

The key play: Carson Palmer threw four interceptions before he found receiver Michael Floyd in the end zone for a 31-yard touchdown with 2:20 to play to give the Cardinals a 15-0 lead. A two-point conversion set the final score.

Stat of the game: Second-year Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson recorded his first home loss as a pro and threw for 108 yards on 11-of-27 passing.

Remember me? Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch was held to 71 rushing yards by Arizona. For the Cardinals, it was linebacker Daryl Washington leading the way with seven tackles, a sack plus three quarterback hits.

2014

The context: At 6-4, the Seahawks met a red-hot 9-1 Cardinals squad on a six-game winning streak. Arizona started quarterback Drew Stanton, who had led Arizona to three victories with Palmer sidelined due to two different injuries to that point in the year. The Cardinals were without Larry Fitzgerald, whose sprained MCL kept him out of a game for the first time in 110 games.

Result: Seattle came away with a 19-3 victory.

The key play: A 20-yard touchdown pass from Wilson to tight end Cooper Helfet in the third quarter was telling of an Arizona defense that struggled against a Seahawks tight end group. Helfet, Tony Moeaki and Luke Willson caught seven passes for 82 yards.

Stat of the game: It’s less about the near shutout and more about what the game meant for the rest of the regular season: In just the second loss of the year in Week 12, the Cardinals’ defeat began a 2-4 stretch to finish to the regular season that gave Arizona (11-5) a Wild Card berth leading to a loss to the Carolina Panthers. Meanwhile, the win for Seattle (12-4) was the first of six straight to wrap the year as NFC West champions.

Remember me? Arizona defensive end Calais Campbell recorded a then-career-high three sacks.

2015

The context: The Week 10 showdown saw Arizona enter 6-2 and Seattle at 4-4. Both teams were coming off a bye.

Result: Jumping out to a 19-0 lead, the Cardinals hung on to win 39-32 despite at one point falling behind 29-25 with 13 minutes to play.

The key play: Andre Ellington ripped off a 48-yard touchdown score to put Arizona ahead 39-29 with 1:58 to go. During it, Stanton danced.

Stat of the game: Carson Palmer threw for 363 yards and three touchdowns with a pick and two fumbles. Larry Fitzgerald was on the end of 10 of those completions for 130 yards, while Floyd reeled in seven catches for 113 yards and two early touchdowns before the Seahawks got on the board.

Remember me? Arizona running back Chris Johnson took 25 carries for 58 yards with Ellington only adding 61 thanks to his long touchdown run. Meanwhile, Cardinals rookie back David Johnson didn’t receive a carry — he was on kick return duty and was almost a month away from becoming the featured back once Chris Johnson went down with a season-ending injury.

2016

The context: Out of the playoff picture, Arizona (5-7-1) entered the Week 16 game hoping to keep Seattle (9-4-1) from getting one of two needed wins to clinch the No. 2 seed in the NFC. Previously, the teams put together a 6-6 tie in Week 7.

Result: The Cardinals came away with a 34-31 victory.

The key play: Arizona drove 50 yards in a minute thanks to catches by David Johnson and Fitzgerald, and kicker Chandler Catanzaro nailed a 43-yard field goal with no time on the clock.

Stat of the game: Johnson scored three touchdowns and rushed for 95 yards on 28 carries. He also caught four balls for 41 yards.

Remember me? The Cardinals’ two leading tacklers were, you guessed it: Linebacker Sio Moore (14 tackles, 2 for loss), who is not in the NFL this year, and then-rookie cornerback Brandon Williams (11 tackles), who has two tackles this season for Arizona
