Snapshot – Arizona State comes up short

Despite the loss, ASU's top two receivers did well. Aaron Pflugrad (pictured) and Gerell Robinson combined for 15 catches, 163 yards and a touchdown. Illinois quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase was a handful for the Devil's defense. Aided by some blown holding calls, Scheelhaase went 11-for-15 with 135 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Here was a stupid set of downs. In the waning minutes of the fourth quarter, the Devils trailed by three and had a fresh set. Rather than looking to put together some plays, wind down the clock and continue the drive, they opted to attempt to go for a big gain. Four times. And four times it didn't work. Game over. Keep thinking, coach. Dennis Erickson was obviously not ready for Illinois' tough defense or double threat quarterback. He's got a lot to think about on the plane ride home so his Sun Devils are ready for USC on Saturday. Six sacks. Six. That's all that needs to be said about Illinois' exploitation of Arizona State's offensive line.
