The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Wednesday top pitching prospect Jon Duplantier was headed to the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.

In a corresponding move, the team recalled right-hander Stefan Crichton.

Duplantier went only three innings in a 7-4 loss to the Phillies on Tuesday, allowing four earned runs on seven hits, a walk and a strikeout. His ERA on the season went from 3.27 to 4.32 in the outing, his eighth appearance in MLB for 2019.

It was only Duplantier’s third big league start as the 24-year-old right-hander made his major league debut this season. His first five outings were in relief, a stretch in which he went 12 innings and allowed only three runs for a 2.25 ERA.

The injury is only the latest blow to the pitching depth of the D-backs, who have seen injury to Luke Weaver and struggles of Zack Godley create holes in their rotation. Taylor Clarke is already on the big-league team, leaving a question mark as to who will take Duplantier’s place when his spot in the rotation comes up again.

Crichton comes back to the big leagues after the team selected his contract on May 28, adding him to the 40-man roster. He was optioned back to Triple-A Reno on June 3 when outfielder David Peralta returned from the IL, and in his short stint with the D-backs, Crichton pitched four scoreless outings.

The 27-year-old Crichton allowed one hit over the 2.2 innings he pitched, walking nobody and striking out three. He had a WHIP of 0.375.

In Reno, Crichton owns a 3.62 ERA in 22 relief appearances this season. The 2019 season marks only the second time Crichton has been with a big league team in his career, the first being when he had eight appearances with the Baltimore Orioles in 2017.
