The Arizona Coyotes have recalled defenseman Kyle Capobianco from AHL Tucson two days after another defenseman sustained an injury.

In the Coyotes’ game against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday, veteran defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson suffered a lower-body injury and did not return. According to a report on Monday morning from The Athletic’s Craig Morgan, Hjalmarsson will be out about three months with a cracked fibula.

The team is saying Hjalmarsson will be out indefinitely. He has been placed on injured reserve.

Hjalmarsson was injured Saturday by blocking a shot from Colorado’s Erik Johnson.

So, with a defenseman down, Capobianco comes up from the Tucson Roadrunners (AHL). He was on the Coyotes’ opening night roster but didn’t get into the lineup at all before eventually being sent down on Friday for fellow defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin to come up.

Capobianco himself sustained a serious injury last year in the second NHL game he played and missed the rest of the year, but recovered in the offseason and will now join Lyubushkin in filling in on the Coyotes’ blue line while Hjalmarsson is sidelined.

The team’s next game is on Tuesday night in Winnipeg.
