While the Arizona Cardinals flew free agent cornerback Bashaud Breeland in on Monday with the intent of signing him, that won’t happen until the veteran is COVID-19 free, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Arizona agreed to a deal with Breeland, as first reported by Josina Anderson, amid a hit to the cornerback depth chart. But upon arrival, Breeland tested positive for the virus, reports Pelissero.

That could keep Breeland away from a warp-speed learning curve in practices this week as the Cardinals prepare for a Sunday game against the Dallas Cowboys.

Breeland was wooed by Arizona after the team awaits further evaluation of rookie cornerback Marco Wilson, who on Saturday in a loss to the Indianapolis Colts hurt his shoulder.

Arizona last week placed veteran cornerback Robert Alford on the IR. With that, the team against the Colts used midseason pickup Antonio Hamilton in nickel packages before turning to Kevin Peterson as the third cornerback after Wilson’s injury.

Over 13 games played with the Minnesota Vikings in 2021, Breeland recorded 63 tackles, two interceptions, five passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

Before his time with the Vikings, Breeland also played for the the Washington Football Team (2014-17), the Green Bay Packers (2018) and the the Kansas City Chiefs (2019-20).
