The Mavericks scraped out the series victory over the Jazz despite missing star Luka Doncic for the first three games. They lost Game 1 but went ahead 2-1 before losing Game 4 and then closing out with two straight wins.
Point guard Jalen Brunson — who in college at Villanova was teammates with Phoenix’s Mikal Bridges — picked up the slack in the first three games, scoring 24, 41 and 31 points, respectively.
Doncic returned with 30 points in Game 4, 33 points in Game 5 and then 24 more in the series-clinching victory on Thursday.
In the regular season, the Suns went 3-0 against the Mavericks, never winning by less than seven points.
However, they have not seen the team led by coach Jason Kidd since Jan. 20. Before that, Phoenix won two back-to-back games in Dallas on Nov. 17 and 19.
