D-backs place RHP Ian Kennedy on 15-day IL with calf inflammation

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed setup man Ian Kennedy on the 15-day injured list due to right calf inflammation, the team announced Monday afternoon.
Reliever Keynan Middleton will rejoin the D-backs from Triple-A Reno.
Manager Torey Lovullo previously ruled Kennedy out for Monday’s July Fourth contest against the San Francisco Giants after the veteran came off the field in the eighth inning Sunday versus the Colorado Rockies.
Kennedy underwent an MRI before going on the IL.
“It was still bothering him enough this morning that we want to we want to get some imaging,” Lovullo said in a press conference.
“We think it could be the altitude in Denver, the hydration aspect of it. We don’t know the cause of it. But we have to deal with what’s going on right now and it’s just tightness in one particular spot and one particular area. So (the MRI) is gonna show something, I’m certain of that.”
Kennedy has 32 appearances this year, primarily as the eighth-inning go-to ahead of closer Mark Melancon.
He owns a 3.58 ERA and four saves this year and a 2.75 ERA in his last 24 outings after a rocky start to the season.
The 37-year-old exited Sunday’s game with one out, a 3-2 count and a 5-3 lead. Arizona fell 6-5 after Rockies first baseman C.J. Cron hit a game-winning three-run home run off Noe Ramirez.
Middleton returns after going on the 15-day injured list on April 29. The D-backs activated the righty and optioned him to Triple-A on June 3.
He has a 3.68 ERA in six MLB games this season and a 2.57 mark in 14 appearances in the minors.
The D-backs take on the Giants at Chase Field. First pitch is at 3:10 p.m.
