Arizona State men’s golfer David Puig announced Monday that he is leaving his amateur status behind and turning pro.

The ninth-ranked amateur in the world is already listed as a player for LIV Golf, starting with the LIV Golf Invitational Chicago this week at Rich Harvest Farms.

Puig will compete with a four-player team, Torque GC, which also includes Joaquin Niemann, Scott Vincent and Jed Morgan.

“I could not be more grateful to be part of the Sun Devil family, especially to Coach Matt Thurmond, Coach Armen Kirakossian, and all of my teammates,” Puig wrote on Instagram. “So many more people have helped me over the past few years and I know my success wouldn’t be the same without everyone. You’ve helped me to grow and improve in this great program, not only as a player, but also as a person. I’ve loved every minute of it. Thank you!

“Although it has probably been the hardest decision that I’ve ever made, I’ve decided to turn professional this week.”

Puig added that he will remain enrolled as an ASU student with an expectation to graduate next year.

The 20-year-old Spaniard said his “base will be in Tempe, hopefully forever.”

Puig has already played as an amateur in two LIV events, and his future with the program was uncertain over the past few months as he considered a move to the pros.

At ASU, Puig was a two-time All-American in 2021 and 2022.
