NBA reveals 2021-22 City Edition jerseys; Suns stick with Valley option

The Phoenix Suns opted out of a jersey refresh this season, having made the NBA Finals a year ago that followed a boost in jersey sales.

It helped that their City Edition jerseys, by most accounts, looked good.

Other NBA teams on Monday released new City Edition jerseys for the 2021-22 season, the league’s 75th. The Utah Jazz joined Phoenix in opting out of a redo.

To celebrate the NBA’s diamond anniversary, many teams went to their respective pasts in their redesigns.

The Brooklyn Nets, Minnesota Timberwolves, Houston Rockets, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings, Washington Wizards and Charlotte Hornets borrowed logos and designs very closely to their past teams.

Others like the Toronto Raptors, Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs took some aspects of old styles and remixed the color gradients.

The Miami Heat went out on a big limb with a “mashup” of fonts, colors and styles for the numbering and lettering. Fans can even pick which fonts they want for each number on custom jerseys.

And then there’s the Jazz and Suns, who stuck with what worked last year.

During the second half of the 2020-21 season, Phoenix’s sales climbed 16 spots compared to the first half of the year. Guard Devin Booker ended the regular season sixth in jersey sales, per sales at NBAStore.com.

As a team, Phoenix finished the second-half of last season third in sales, behind only the Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets. And it’s likely a lot of that action involved their “Valley” City Edition uniforms that are back for 2021-22.
