Sedona Red Recap: Padres early outburst sends D-backs to third straight loss

When it rains, it pours.

Or at least that was the case in the first inning at Chase Field on Monday night. The San Diego Padres touched up Jeremy Hellickson for five runs in the top half of the inning, then it literally started raining so hard outside that water was coming through the roof and landing on the seats behind home plate. Just as a quick reminder, this is an indoor stadium and the roof was closed.

Hellickson was making his first start since Aug. 17, coming off a DL stint caused by a strained hamstring. The first batter he faced was Wil Myers, who promptly homered. Then a series of walks and errors conspired to put the Arizona Diamondbacks in a big hole early.

The 28-year old righty exited after just one inning of work, snapping a personal streak of seven consecutive quality starts at home.

Things didn’t get much better for the D-backs from there, as they ultimately lost by a final of 10-3 in front of 15,951 fans. They’ve now dropped three straight, falling behind in the top half of the first inning in each of those defeats.

THE GOOD

-Jake Lamb turned an unassisted double play in the third.

-David Peralta extended his career-high hitting streak to 11 games.

-With this one out of hand late, some of the young Arizona hitters got a chance to play. Among them, Brandon Drury picked up his first Major League RBI.

THE BAD

-For the third straight night, the D-backs trailed before they even got up to bat. And for the second time in that stretch, they surrendered a homerun to the game’s leadoff hitter.

-The first inning tonight was particularly forgettable, as the Padres piled up five runs on a homer, two walks, two singles, two stolen bases and two fielding errors by Arizona.

-The fifth inning wasn’t very kind to the Diamondbacks either, as San Diego brought nine hitters to the plate, and notched five more runs. On the bright side, there weren’t any errors.

>-For the first time in eight contests, Arizona did not hit a homerun.

-Overall, the D-backs committed three errors on the evening.

STAT OF THE GAME

100: Paul Goldschmidt picked up his 100th RBI of the season in the first, joining Luis Gonzalez as the only Arizona hitters to ever record multiple 100-RBI campaigns.

HE SAID IT

“Felt like I haven’t been on the mound my whole life. Just felt really weird out there. I’ve got to make an adjustment early and try to keep us in the game. Putting up a five-spot before we even get a chance to bat is by far my worst inning of my career.” -Jeremy Hellickson

NOTED

-Earlier in the day, Goldschmidt was announced as the Diamondbacks’ Roberto Clemente Award nominee.

-This was the 27th outing of seven-plus innings by the Arizona bullpen over the last three years – the most in the Majors over that stretch.

UP NEXT

-These two clubs will meet again tomorrow night at Chase Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40, with pregame coverage beginning at 6 on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM.

-Jhoulys Chacin will get the start for Arizona, while San Diego counters with Tyson Ross.

-Chacin (0-1) will be making just his third start of the season, and his first since Aug. 29. He’s been solid in his first two outings, posting a 2.70 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in games against Oakland and St. Louis. For his career, he’s 5-2 with a 2.88 ERA in 12 meetings with the Padres.

-Ross (10-10) has the best ERA (3.24) among all San Diego starters this season. In his last outing, he went seven innings while yielding three earned runs – all via solo homeruns – against the Rockies. In three meetings with the D-backs already in 2015, he’s 2-0 with a 2.14 ERA and 0.90 WHIP.
