Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas sets WNBA record for triple-doubles in a season

Phoenix Mercury All-Star Alyssa Thomas recorded her seventh triple-double of the season during Tuesday’s 92-84 road win against the Los Angeles Sparks, setting a single-season record in the WNBA.

It was her own record that she broke, as Thomas recorded six triple-doubles back in 2023 with the Connecticut Sun. The rest of the league this season has a combined six triple-doubles.

Thomas finished Tuesday’s game with 12 points, 16 rebounds and 15 assists, becoming the first player in league history with at least 15 rebounds and 15 assists in a single game. She was a team-best +15 on the floor.

Satou Sabally led the Mercury with 19 points, followed closely by Kahleah Copper’s 18 and Sami Whitcomb’s 17 off the bench. Whitcomb hit five triples, as Phoenix outscored Los Angeles in bench points 39-13.

Phoenix led by as many 16 points during the fourth quarter after a 13-3 run. It shot 47.8% from the floor and 44% (11-for-25) from beyond the arc in the win.

Dearica Hamby paced the Sparks with 25 points and eight rebounds. Los Angeles shot 47.7% from the field but 29.2% from deep.

The Mercury have won seven straight games against the Sparks and improved to 23-14 this season, fourth in the league. There are seven games remaining in the regular season, and their magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to two.

The Mercury return home for their next three games, starting with Thursday’s matchup against the Chicago Sky at PHX Arena.
