Report: DeWanna Bonner signs with Atlanta Dream following buyout with Mercury

Veteran forward DeWanna Bonner has signed with the Atlanta Dream following a buyout by the Phoenix Mercury, according to ESPN’s Alexa Philippou.

Philippou added the deal is at the prorated max at about $116,000.

With the Mercury (13-25) out of playoff contention, the team announced Monday that it reached a buyout agreement with the 17-year veteran, giving her a chance to sign with a contending team.

Bonner joins the Dream (25-13), which is fourth in the league standings and has already clinched a playoff berth. She joins former Mercury player Brittney Griner, four-time All-Star Allisha Gray and Angel Reese.

In 37 games this season, Bonner is averaging 10.6 points (on 39.4% shooting) while registering 6.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.

After being drafted by the Mercury with the fifth overall pick in 2009, Bonner spent her first 10 seasons (2009-19) in Phoenix. During her first tenure in Phoenix, Bonner was a six-time All-Star, two-time WNBA champion and three-time Sixth Player of the Year.

After spending five seasons with the Connecticut Sun (2020-24), she was waived by the Indiana Fever and signed back with the Mercury last season. She was a contributor to a Mercury squad that reached the WNBA Finals.

She is the Mercury’s current all-time leader in total rebounds.
