Report: Mercury GM Nick U’Ren to interview for lead 76ers exec job

Phoenix Mercury general manager Nick U’Ren is expected to interview for the Philadelphia 76ers’ vacant president of basketball operations job, according to NBA insiders Marc Stein and Jake Fischer.

The report comes four games into the Mercury’s regular season. Phoenix is 2-2.

Former Golden State executive Bob Myers, who worked with U’Ren for nine seasons with the Warriors, is leading the search. U’Ren held the title of Warriors executive director of basketball operations under then-president of basketball operations Myers before taking the Mercury job.

Sources say Nick U’Ren, lead executive for the Phoenix Mercury and fresh off a run to last season’s WNBA Finals, is also known to be on Myers’ list of planned interviewees. U’Ren worked for nine years in Golden State under Myers and is a natural target given their past synergy as well as U’Ren’s success and experience gained in the desert.

Along with U’Ren, Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Mike Gansey and Minnesota Timberwolves general manager Matt Lloyd are meeting with Myers this week, according to Fischer.

The 76ers need a new lead decision maker after firing president of basketball operations Daryl Morey last week.

Taking over in 2023, U’Ren has helped Phoenix reach the playoffs twice in his tenure. That includes the Mercury’s run to the WNBA Finals last year.
