TEMPE -- The Arizona State Baseball team is saying goodbye to Packard Stadium.

The Arizona Board of Regents has approved Arizona State University's lease with the City of Phoenix that will have the team move to Phoenix Municipal Stadium in 2015.

"The anticipation would be that we would move the ASU baseball program to that location," ASU Executive Vice President Morgan Olsen told the regents at their meeting in Tempe today. "The term of the lease is 25 years, and we commence that lease as soon as the Oakland A's vacate their tenancy there."

Olsen said that the University will have full control of the stadium and would have baseball administrative offices and support facilities, in addition to the team playing their home games there. The school would also operate the stadium for any other events that are hosted at the facility.

The A's are expected to move to Hohokam Park in Mesa once the Chicago Cubs move to their new Cactus League stadium near Mesa Riverview.

Arizona State baseball has called Packard Stadium home since 1974.

    ASU baseball moving?
Does anyone know the reason for the move? I like Muni and all, but Packard is right on campus and has an ambiance all it's own. Am I missing something?

    Capacity
One of the big reasons for the move is the capacity. Muni holds twice as many people as Packard. The other, and probably main reason, Packard is in the newly designated Athletics Facilities District and prime real estate. The University will be looking to make some $$ on that land.

    Tempe Diablo
I always wondered why ASU didn't try to make some deal with Tempe to use Diablo Stadium. It has a slightly larger seating capacity than Phoenix Muni and I would have thought Tempe would welcome something like that. There's also the Diablo-Devils tie-in. But I didn't know the A's were moving out of Phx Muni so I guess it makes sense for ASU to have a ball park all to themselves. I like Phx Muni also, been going there since the 60's... nice move for the Devils.

    Next Step MLB
ASU Baseball is Tomorrows Major Leaguers Today. How fitting they will play on a former AAA baseball field. Back in the 70's the PCL slogan was "Tomorrows Major Leaguers Today". Since 1961 ASU Baseball has produced more Major Leaguers than any other program in the world(over 100). Took Texas over 110 years and USC over 80 yrs to reach 100 players.
