Avalanche of third-period goals do in Coyotes: By The Numbers

Mar 1, 2014, 5:59 AM | Updated: 5:59 am

The Phoenix Coyotes dropped their third straight game — and their second since the Olympic break on Friday, when they fell to the Colorado Avalanche 4-2 in Denver.

Despite outshooting the Avalanche and getting two goals from their captain, an avalanche of third-period goals from the home team ultimately doomed the Coyotes in Denver.

Here’s a closer look at the loss, by the numbers:

2

Captain Shane Doan notched the Coyotes’ only two goals. For him, it was his first two-goal game since Nov. 9, when the Coyotes won in a shootout.

3

The Coyotes entered the third period in a 1-1 tie with the Avalanche, goaltender Thomas Greiss having saved 19 of the eventual 29 shots he’d keep out of the net.

12

The Avalanche notched 12 takeaways in the game, exercising better defensive prowess than the Coyotes, who only logged 4.

16:38

In just 16:38 of ice time, 21-year-old Gabriel Landeskog of Colorado managed a goal and two assists. He was the first star of the game.

17

The Coyotes extended noteworthy help to Greiss, the team’s backup goalie, in blocking 17 shots for his aid. Defensemen Keith Yandle and Michael Stone each had three.
