Alvin Gentry is no longer the head coach of the Phoenix Suns, as it was announced Friday that he and the team have decided to part ways.

The Suns lost 98-94 to the Milwaukee Bucks at US Airways Center Thursday night. The defeat, their fourth straight at home, dropped the Suns' record to a Western Conference-worst 13-28.

Gentry was in his fifth season as head coach of the Suns and had compiled a record of 158-144. The 58-year-old became the coach of the team in February of 2009 on an interim basis when Terry Porter was fired in his first season on the job. Gentry guided the Suns to an 18-13 mark the rest of the season. He was given the job on a permanent basis following the completion of the 2008-09 season

Undoubtedly, the finest moments of the Gentry era came in the 2009-10 season when the Suns reached the Western Conference Finals before falling to the Los Angeles Lakers in six games. Los Angeles would go on to defeat the Boston Celtics to win the NBA championship.

The Suns have missed the postseason in three of the last four seasons and are very much in danger of doing so again this season.

The Suns don't play another game until next Wednesday when they travel to take on the Sacramento Kings.

    About time!!!!!
Could not stand the way gentry managed this team. Always sat his starters too long, just the same he played the backups waaaay too much. This goes all the way back to when we lost to te lakers in the western conference finals, when Steve Nash didn't even come back into the game until there were 3 minutes left in an elimination game. Just get majerle to interm the rest of this year, and find a good coach for next!!

    Stupid
This is a stupid move. I like Lon Babby and Lance Blanks but they have done literally nothing to make this a better team and firing a very good coach is another huge mistake. I am fed up with this team right now and it starts with you Robert Sarver.

    Didn't see this coming
Sarver didn't like the idea of giving up the season and playing the young guys? Suns became a dumb team when D'Antoni decided he wasn't going to play any young guys and told Sarver they would rot on the bench if he drafted them. Watch them go against what Babby said and start giving up those 1's for some guys like Gay to stem the bleeding. What they should do is exactly what Gentry wanted. Suck for Luck strategy.

Gentry wasn't the problem. The team just sucks! Plus this is a tanking year so this is dumb.

    Sad
Sad to see the Suns fall so far and become such a joke. Baby, Blanks, and Sarver are a trifecta of incompetence. This is a crap team, firing Gentry will do nothing. And who will they get to replace him that's better, No one is going to want to come to this dumpster fire. Suns used to own this town, now they are a laughing stock.
