New York Knicks down Phoenix Suns in overtime: By the numbers

Jan 14, 2014, 4:57 AM | Updated: Jan 18, 2014, 4:58 pm

The Phoenix Suns trailed for most of the game Monday at Madison Square Garden and entered the fourth quarter down seven against the New York Knicks, but Phoenix came back and built an 88-83 lead with 4:50 to go. A Raymond Felton 3-pointer put New York up 92-90 with just under a minute left, and Leandro Barbosa hit two free throws to send the game into overtime, where the Knicks outlasted the Suns, prevailing 98-96.

The Suns lost their third game in a row and fell to 21-16 on the season, while New York won its fifth straight and improved to 15-22.

Here’s a look at Monday’s game by the numbers:

1

The Suns finished their eastern road trip with just one win in five games, losing the last three by a combined nine points.

8

Starting power forward Channing Frye had a poor shooting night (3-for-12 overall), but by making two out of seven 3-pointers, the starting power forward has hit a shot from behind the arc in eight straight games.

The Suns had a chance to leap ahead of Dallas (23-16) in the Western Conference standings, but with the loss, Phoenix stayed pat at eighth place.

16

Shooting guard Gerald Green had one of his worst shooting nights of the season, making just 2-of-16 shots and missing all seven of his 3-pointers. Not since Dec. 4 against Houston has he had such a low percentage night from the floor. He did, however, grab nine rebounds and dish out three assists in 42 minutes.

18

Phoenix was active on the defensive end, forcing 18 New York turnovers, and recording 19 points off those miscues.

21

Barbosa, who joined the team before its second matchup of the five-game road trip, had his best outing since rejoining the Suns. He scored 14 of Phoenix’s 24 points in the fourth quarter and finished with 21 on 8-of-15 shooting. New York had trouble keeping the 31-year-old guard from the rim in the fourth period, as he made three driving layups and hit all of his four free throws. Barbosa finished as the team’s second-highest scorer, as point guard Goran Dragic led the way with 28.

29

Knicks star Carmelo Anthony punished the Suns both from the field and on the boards, finishing with game highs of 29 points and 16 rebounds — the latter being his second-highest total of the season. He didn’t have an efficient night shooting the ball, however, as he made just nine of his 24 shots.

35.5%

The Suns were anemic from the field Monday, making only 35.5 percent of their 93 shots, including just seven 3-pointers on 30 attempts (23.3 percent). New York shot 43.2 percent from the field and took 12 fewer shots in the game. Phoenix, however, did well from the charity stripe, hitting 23 out of 28 free throws (82.1 percent).

49

Phoenix grabbed 49 rebounds Monday — led by Miles Plumlee’s 11 — but relinquished 53 to the Knicks. Although outrebounded in every game on the road trip, the Suns’ margin was a lot closer than in the other three losses since they last played in Phoenix.
