LISTEN: Shane Doan, Coyotes captain

Shane Doan signed a four-year, $21.2 million contract to remain with the Coyotes in Sept. 2012.

At the time, the Coyotes were coming off an appearance in the Western Conference Finals and seemed to have finally given the franchise stalwart a chance to play for a winner.

Unfortunately, the Coyotes are about to finish their third straight postseason-less season since, and are on pace to post one of the worst records in the NHL.

The 38-year-old Doan has appeared in early 1,400 games — all with the Coyotes franchise — and it would seem asking him to suffer through the beginning of another rebuilding process would seem like a lot to ask.

With that in mind, has Doan considered hanging up his skates at the end of this season and calling it a career?

“No, I haven’t,” he told Burns and Gambo on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM Wednesday. “I signed a contract and my contract, I’ve got another year on my contract and that’s pretty important to me.

“What you say I’m supposed to do, that’s what I’m supposed to do. So it hasn’t really crossed my mind that way.”

Doan said obviously this has been a tough year, “if not the toughest,” and in a way it seems almost unfair for the guy.

This season, Doan is fourth on the team with 29 points, while his 41 PIMs rank him third on the team.

The captain is on the ice 18:32 minutes per night, all for a team that has started to go young in an effort to look toward the future.
