The Arizona Diamondbacks placed outfielder Steven Souza Jr. on the 10-day disabled list after he aggravated a strained right pectoral injury that kept him out of action for the first month of the season.
Arizona recalled center fielder Socrates Brito to add depth to a group that is also without starting center fielder A.J. Pollock, who could miss four to eight weeks with an avulsion fracture to his left thumb.
Brito is hitting .323 with eight doubles, two triples, two home runs and 21 RBI with Triple-A Reno this season. He has split his time in center field (25 games), left field (10) and right (nine).
In 58 games with the D-backs in 2015 and 2016, the 25-year-old Brito hit .211 with six doubles, two triples and four home runs.
Souza, who was acquired by Arizona in a three-team deal this offseason, injured his pectoral muscle in spring.
He debuted on May 3 and has played in 13 games before re-injuring himself Friday. Manager Torey Lovullo had hoped the team could keep Souza off the disabled list after the injury.
Souza missed the next two games following the injury and took one pinch-hit at-bat Monday night against Milwaukee before he was placed on the disabled list.
