Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo will not manage the team on Friday night against the San Francisco Giants due to illness, the team announced Friday.
Lovullo saw a doctor on Friday and the decision was made he would be staying at home.
Bench coach Jerry Narron will take over managing duties for Lovullo.
In his second season under the role, Narron replaced Ron Gardenhire as bench coach for the 2017 season when Gardenhire’s cancer diagnosis was announced. A long-time MLB coach, Narron, 62, managed the Texas Rangers (2001-02) and the Cincinnati Reds (2005-07).
Taking Narron’s place Friday night as bench coach will be Robby Hammock. Hammock, a former D-backs catcher for six seasons, previously managed in the team’s minor league systems from 2014-16. Since Nov. 2016, Hammock has been the quality control/catching coach for the D-backs. The 41-year-old’s claim to fame is catching Randy Johnson’s perfect game in 2004.
After falling to the Giants on Thursday night, the D-backs enter Friday’s play trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers by one game in the NL West. In the Wild Card race, they are in third place, behind the Atlanta Braves by 0.5 games for the last playoff spot.
