TEMPE, Ariz. — Carson Palmer did not miss a start for the Arizona Cardinals in 2013.

In fact, his durability was one of the underrated factors in the team’s 10-6 season.

Two games into the 2014 season, Palmer has already missed one contest due to a nerve injury in his right shoulder. It’s possible he’ll be out even longer.

“If he can go, he’ll go,” Cardinals coach Bruce Arians said about Palmer in relation to Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, which is followed by the team’s bye week. “This is one of those crazy things where you’ll wake up one day and be fine. We don’t know what day that’s going to be, though. That’s the thing.”

Arians said Drew Stanton, who filled in for Palmer in the win over the New York Giants, will continue to get extended reps in practice, as will rookie Logan Thomas.

But while Arians said Palmer does not need to practice this week in order to play in Sunday’s game, there is a clear concern for the quarterback who threw for 4,274 yards and 24 touchdowns last season. Stanton did a serviceable job Sunday in guiding the team to a tough road win, but it’s tough to see the Cardinals challenging for the NFC West title without No. 3 under center.
