Phoenix Suns’ Markieff Morris and Marcus Morris charged with felony aggravated assault

Apr 21, 2015, 8:49 PM | Updated: 9:57 pm

In January, word came out that Markieff and Marcus Morris were potential suspects in an assault case stemming from an incident that occurred on January 24.

Tuesday, they were charged with aggravated assault.

According to police, the Morris twins were two of five people who assaulted Erik Hood outside of a basketball game at a recreation center.

Police say Hood was struck in the head from behind at first and then, while trying to run to his car, was struck a second time before falling to the ground and being repeatedly punched and kicked by all five suspects.

From there, police say everyone left, with Hood being taken to the hospital where he was treated for a broken nose, bruises and abrasions.

Police say it is alleged the victim was assaulted for sending an inappropriate text message to the Morris brothers’ mother.

The court appearance for the Morris twins is set for May 7.

The Phoenix Suns released statements from president of basketball operations Lon Babby regarding the recent events as well as the Morris twins.

“We have been advised by our attorneys not to discuss this case or make any statements about it,” the twins said. “We are sorry for the distraction this has caused to our fans and the Suns.”

“We are disappointed to learn that Marcus and Markieff Morris have been charged,” Babby said. “This is a serious matter, and we will treat it as such. However, at this time, we think it is most appropriate to continue to monitor the legal process as it unfolds before responding further.”
