J.D. Martinez a homer away from history after slam vs. Giants

Closer and closer, the Diamondbacks’ J.D. Martinez gets to hitting into history.

And he’s two home runs away from breaking a record that has held for 68 years. With one more home run, Martinez can tie Ralph Kiner, who in 1949 hit 15 home runs in the month of September for a National League record that’s since held.

Through just two innings on Tuesday in an 11-4 win over the Giants, Martinez had recorded six RBI, already tying his career-best for a single game. Four of those runs came courtesy of a second-inning grand slam that put Arizona ahead 8-0 and chased San Francisco starter Matt Moore.

That slam gave Martinez 35 RBI in the month of September, tying Luis Gonzalez for the franchise record of RBI in a single month.

Martinez has now hit 28 home runs in 58 games played for the D-backs.

Before the grand slam, Martinez hit a two-RBI double to score A.J. Pollock and Paul Goldschmidt in the first inning. A single in the fourth frame put the right fielder a triple shy of completing the cycle.
