Chandler Jones addresses the Arizona House of Representatives

Jan 9, 2018, 10:59 AM

When it comes to rushing the quarterback of opposing teams, Chandler Jones is fearless. When speaking to the Arizona House of Representatives? Not as much.

The opening day of the 2018 session featured an unlikely speaker in the sixth-year pro.

“Every single Sunday I run out in front of thousands of football fans, and this is way more nerve-racking,” said Jones.

After playing four seasons with the New England Patriots, Jones was acquired by the Cardinals prior to the 2016 season in exchange for a second round pick. In two years with the team, he has recorded six forced fumbles in addition to 28 sacks, including a league-leading 17 in 2017, and a First-Team All-Pro nod.

Over the course of the address, Jones explained how he experienced two different styles of coaching under Bruce Arians and Bill Belichick but that both could win in a unique manner. He took lessons from each of his former coaches to connect football to legislation.

“It goes to show you that there isn’t one proven way to succeed,” said Jones. “What we do as a team and what you do as a legislator is all about a working together rather than individually.”
