Suns re-sign point guard Isaiah Canaan

The Phoenix Suns have signed point guard Isaiah Canaan, the team announced Friday.

Canaan, who played with the Suns for 19 games during the 2017-18 season, prepares to head back out onto the court after suffering a gruesome ankle fracture on Jan. 31. He was signed by the Suns just seven weeks earlier after the team received an injury hardship exemption.

During his time with the team, Canaan immediately entered the rotation. He averaged 9.1 points, 4.1 assists and 2.3 rebounds in 22.0 minutes. Out of 19 games played, he had 10 double-digit scoring performances with a season-high 17 points in a win against the Dallas Mavericks on Dec. 18.

In a move to add depth to the point guard spot after his injury, Canaan was waived by the team on Feb. 8, making room for Elfrid Payton, who was acquired in a trade deadline day deal for a second-round pick.

Even after Canaan was waived, he remained with the organization, attending practices, shootarounds and games as the Suns allowed him to rehab at their facility.

After releasing Tyler Ulis in June, the Suns have four point guards signed in Brandon Knight, rookie Elie Okobo, Shaquille Harrison and Canaan.

The roster stands at 18 players, including the two-way contract of rookie George King and forward Darrell Arthur, who was reportedly expected to be bought out after being acquired from the Nets in the Jared Dudley trade.

Phoenix will need to cut down the roster to 15 players by the start of the regular season.
