Mike Bercovici might be a part of the AAF’s most memorable play ever

Mike Bercovici’s football career has spanned the spectrum.

He threw the infamous Jail Mary at Arizona State. Was it the most memorable play in ASU history? In recent memory, for sure.

He lived in obscurity grinding at his football career after he left ASU. Bercovici’s pro career started with the San Diego Chargers in 2016-17 before a brief stint with the Arizona Cardinals in 2017.

Bercovici then signed with the Arizona Hotshots in the inaugural season of the Alliance of American Football. But before playing a game, he was shipped to the San Diego Fleet, who selected him in the AAF’s quarterback draft.

It took just four minutes and 10 seconds into Bercovici’s season — and into the league’s first week of existance — for him to become famous for all the wrong reasons. A blind, helmet-to-helmet hit on the quarterback went viral during the Week 1 spike in attention for the new football league.

Less than two months later, the AAF ceased football operations amid turmoil atop its leadership totem pole.

A bad hit on Bercovici just might be the most memorable play of the league’s brief existence if the AAF doesn’t start up operations again.
