Mercury’s DeWanna Bonner named 2019 WNBA All-Star reserve

Phoenix Mercury forward DeWanna Bonner will join teammate Brittney Griner in the 2019 WNBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas.

Bonner was named Monday as a frontcourt reserve for the game that will be played on Saturday, July 27. It will mark her third All-Star appearance (2015, 2018) and second in a row.

The 31-year-old and league-leading scorer has averaged 19.4 points, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals to go with a career-high 7.7 rebounds per game this season. So far, she’s in the midst of her best scoring season since she averaged 20.6 points for Phoenix in 2012.

WNBA head coaches voted for three guards, five frontcourt players and four additional players of any position to fill out the rosters after starters were named last week.

Griner was already named to the 2019 All-Star team after being voted in as a starting center.

Fans, WNBA players and media voted in the starters, but the teams will be selected by leading vote-getters Elena Delle Donne of Washington and A’ja Wilson of Las Vegas. They will take turns drafting first from the pool of remaining starters and then from the 12 reserves.
