Arizona dedicates practice fields to former head coach Dick Tomey

The University of Arizona dedicated their football practice fields to long-time head coach Dick Tomey, who passed away in May of 2019.

Tomey, who coached in Tucson for 14 seasons, including two 10-win campaigns in 1993 and 1998, passed away at 80-years-old earlier this year after a battle with lung cancer.
Arizona has worn helmet patches this season with Tomey’s initials in honor of the winningest head coach in program history.
He compiled a 95-64-4 record, won the Pac-10 Coach of the Year award in 1992 and led the Wildcats to a 29-0 blowout win against Miami in the 1993 Fiesta Bowl.

A plaque with Tomey’s achievements, including mention of his famed “Desert Swarm” defenses in the 1990s, was placed on the gate of the practice fields.
On the bottom of the plaque reads one of his mottos, “the team, the team, the team.”
The university also built a wall with Tomey’s photo, the name of the field and the motto on one of the sides of the practice field area.
Many Arizona alumni were at the event and told stories of Tomey including Lance Briggs, Dennis Northcutt, Glenn Parker and second-year head coach Kevin Sumlin.
