Five days after the Arizona Wildcats fired Kevin Sumlin and commenced a head-coaching search, they’ve learned they’ll need to find a new starting quarterback.

Sophomore Grant Gunnell entered the transfer portal on Thursday, according to WildcatAuthority’s Jason Scheer and AL.com’s Matt Zenitz, among others.

The Arizona Daily Star’s Michael Lev adds that Gunnell’s friend, Boobie Curry, intends to transfer as well. Curry had 10 catches for 89 yards his sophomore year.

The 6-foot-6 Gunnell threw for 625 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions while completing 69% of his passes over Arizona’s 0-5 season.

Gunnell appeared last season as a true freshman, throwing for 1,239 yards, nine touchdowns and one pick while swapping in and out of the rotation with then-senior Khalil Tate.

A 3-star prospect out of Houston, Gunnell had committed to Sumlin’s staff with Texas A&M before the head coach was fired in 2017. Gunnell decommitted in 2018 and later followed Sumlin to Arizona.

Gunnell dealt with a shoulder injury this past season, and Arizona turned to freshman quarterback Will Plummer in three games. The team also has quarterbacks Rhett Rodriguez, Cameron Fietz, Kevin Doyle and Luke Ashworth on its current roster.

The Wildcats did not have a quarterback sign with them on Wednesday in the early signing period for the 2021 recruiting class.

Arizona’s first loss following the firing of Sumlin was receiver Stanley Berryhill, who announced his transfer on Monday. He posted 227 receiving yards as a junior with three scores.
