Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a baseball game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ August 20 loss to the Marlins. Final score: Marlins 12, Diamondbacks 3.

The Good:

There were a couple bright spots in this miserable Diamondbacks’ 12-3 loss to the Marlins Monday night. Left-fielder Jason Kubel recorded his 12th outfield assist, which ties the club record set by Eric Byrnes in 2007 and Gerardo Parra in 2011.

The Bad:

The blowout loss to the Marlins snapped the Diamondbacks’ four-game win streak. The D-backs have now lost four of their last five games at Chase Field and this 12-3 loss was their largest margin of defeat this season. The D-backs have not allowed 20 hits since September 24, 2005 against the Mets.

Noted:

Starter Joe Saunders allowed a career-high nine earned runs and tied his career-high with 12 hits. Saunders pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing 12 hits, nine earned runs and two home runs while recording two strikeouts.

He said it:

Starter Joe Saunders when asked about his outing and his fourth inning struggles:

“You know it was some bad luck and like you said, it was an unraveling inning. Still making pitches, I felt like the only one bad pitch I made was to Stanton and he hit it about five miles. But, s**t happens and you gotta turn the page quick.”

Coming up:

The D-backs play a doubleheader Tuesday against the Marlins at Chase Field. Trevor Cahill (9-10, 3.75) is scheduled to face Ricky Nolasco (9-12, 4.94) in the nightcap of the twin billing.
