Sure, you could read the box score and know who won, but we all know that won’t tell you everything that happened in a baseball game. So, we will give you a closer look, providing you with the analysis, quotes and notes from the D-backs’ August 25 loss to the Padres. Final score: Padres 9, Diamondbacks 3.

The Good:

Justin Upton returned to the lineup and in his first at-bat hit a two-run inside-the-park home run. The D-backs right fielder was also celebrating his 25th birthday. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Upton is the first player to hit an inside-the-park home run on his birthday since Lou Brock on June 18, 1976 vs. Padres.

The Bad:

Ian Kennedy only gave up four hits, but three of them were solo home runs. He also gave up four walks to go along with his six earned runs allowed.

The Ugly:

The Diamondbacks dropped the second game of this three-game set with San Diego, meaning that they have lost the series to a Padres team that is 12 games under .500.

The Diamondbacks have now lost five straight games against the Padres.

He Said it:

“They out-executed us in every aspect of the game, and there you have it.” – Kirk Gibson following the loss.

Coming Up Next:

The Diamondbacks have Joe Saunders on the mound to take on Edinson Volquez for the Padres. Arizona will look to avoid being swept by San Diego.
