Opportunistic D-backs win 7-2 over Padres: By the Numbers

...

Sunday was one of those days when everything went right for the Arizona Diamondbacks.

A seven-run second inning propelled the D-backs to a 7-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

D-backs starting pitcher Jeremy Hellickson had another solid outing, going six innings and giving up only two runs. The D-backs had only four hits, but took advantage of a sloppy second inning by the Padres.

That inning was fueled by three different errors by the Padres. The inning should have ended with zero runs when third baseman Will Middlebrooks fielded a ground ball with the bases loaded, but a poor throw to home resulted in an error and the first run of the game.

Padres starting pitcher Andrew Cashner then hit Hellickson to bring in the second run of the game. The top of the order would make Cashner pay with a two-RBI single from center fielder A.J. Pollock.

The chaos for San Diego would spread further with another error on a David Peralta ground ball to bring in one more run to make it 5-0. That left two runners on for D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and the MVP candidate would bring them both in with his own two-RBI single to bring the lead to 7-0.

Here’s the D-backs win by the numbers.
