Phoenix Suns guard Landry Shamet said Monday that he does not expect to return from an ankle injury until after the NBA All-Star break this coming weekend.

That puts him out for a back-to-back against the Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets on Tuesday and Wednesday. Phoenix will return to action Thursday, Feb. 24, on the road against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

“I’ve come back from ankle injuries a little too early in the past,” Shamet told reporters on Monday. “With the aspirations this team has and what I have for myself, and for us, I want to make sure I’m in the best place possible to be able to sustain (health) for a long time. That’s kind of the thought right now.

“Competitively, I want to play yesterday. I know if I had to go out there and lace ’em up and everything was on the line, like, I’m doing it 100%. … Not that I’m cupcaking it or anything but you have to be a little smarter, take care of your body.”

Shamet missed the past seven games and hasn’t appeared since Jan. 30 against the San Antonio Spurs.

The 24-year-old acquired from the Brooklyn Nets via a trade this offseason is averaging 7.4 points and 1.6 assists per game.

Shamet has played 45 games with seven starts and is shooting a career-low 37% overall and 35% from three-point range.
