Miley, Goldschmidt help D-backs close out road trip with win: By The Numbers

...

For as well as he pitched against the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday, Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Wade Miley left PNC Park with nothing to show for himself but an empty no-decision.

Pitching into the ninth inning for the first time in 2014, Miley and closer Addison Reed promptly combined to allow three earned runs, as the Pirates walked off with a 3-2 victory.

Not eager to repeat that result Sunday at Turner Field, Miley left no doubt when he left in the bottom half of the seventh.

In 6.2 innings of work, the 27-year-old allowed just one earned run on five hits, while striking out eight batters.

While Arizona only mustered five hits on the afternoon, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt provided the run support with a two-run blast off of Atlanta Braves starter Alex Wood in the third inning.

Nick Evans supplied an insurance run with a pinch-hit double in the ninth, and the D-backs avoided a three-game sweep with a 3-1 victory.

Here’s a look back at the two-run win by the numbers:

0:

Miley, who leads the D-backs with 17 home runs allowed, has been perfect in that category over his last three starts.

5:

Paul Goldschmidt’s long ball gave him at least one extra-base hit in five straight games — his longest streak of the season.

8:

Miley struck out at least eight for the fourth time in his last five appearances. In 19 starts, the lefty has compiled 114 punchouts.

9:

With the loss, Atlanta saw its season-high nine-game win streak come to an end.

11:

In addition to the winning streak, Braves centerfielder B.J. Upton watched his career-high 11-game hitting streak come to unceremonious conclusion. Upton struck out three times in four at-bats.

44:

Martin Prado grounded into his second double play in as many games — giving him a team-high 14 on the campaign. Since the start of last season, Prado has 44 GIDPs — tied for most in all of baseball with Matt Holliday of the St. Louis Cardinals.

.143

Since his call-up before last Sunday’s contest against the San Diego Padres, shortstop Nick Ahmed has struggled to hit big league pitching. In 13 at-bats, Ahmed has just two hits.

6/28/12:

Before Sunday’s triumph, Arizona hadn’t won a game at Turner Field since it came back to beat Craig Kimbrel in a 3-2 affair back on June 28, 2012.
