Gonzalez goes yard twice, Dodgers sweep D-backs: By The Numbers

...

Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Trevor Cahill has always felt right at home in his seven career appearances — five as a starter and two as a reliever — at Dodger Stadium.

That trend continued Sunday — at least for 5.1 innings.

Cahill recorded the first 16 outs of the contest without yielding a single base hit, however the sixth inning with ultimately do in both he and the D-backs.

Dee Gordon broke up the no-hitter with a double down the left field line. Cahill then proceeded to issue a free pass to Hanley Ramirez.

Instead of lifting the 27-year-old for right-hander Evan Marshall, who was warming up in the Arizona bullpen, manager Kirk Gibson elected to stay with his starter.

The move backfired immediately as Adrian Gonzalez took Cahill’s 3-1 sinker deep over the center field wall for a 442-foot, three-run shot.

Gonzalez wasn’t done, though. The Dodgers first baseman capped his day off with another three-run shot just an inning later on a 2-1 slider from Oliver Perez.

Gonzalez’s big flies proved to be more than enough as Los Angeles took its final meeting of the campaign with Arizona by a final of 7-2 to secure a series sweep.

Here’s a look back at the five-run loss by the numbers:

1/4:

With his big day Sunday, Gonzalez eclipsed the 100-RBI mark for the seventh time in his career.

Of his 100 runs batted in this season, a quarter (25) have come against D-backs pitching.

0.93:

Sunday’s starter for Los Angeles, Zack Greinke, finished with a 0.93 ERA against Arizona this season.

In 19.1 innings, Greinke allowed just two earned runs.

2:

National League Cy Young favorite Clayton Kershaw was ejected along with Dodgers manager Don Mattingly in the seventh inning by home plate umpire Laz Diaz.

For Kershaw, who didn’t appear in the win, the ejection was the second of his career.

Kershaw was also tossed back on Sept. 14, 2011 for hitting then-Dbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra.

.210:

Arizona was downright atrocious in games vs. Los Angeles this season. Of their 19 contests against the reigning NL West champions, the D-backs won just four times — good for a .210 winning percentage.

3:

In a losing effort, Cody Ross recorded his second three-hit game of the season and first since May 10 — a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox.

4:

In four of their first six games to start the road trip, the D-backs have mustered two runs or less.

Arizona scored just three runs in the three-game series at Chavez Ravine.

6:

Gonzalez’s six RBI tied a career-high initially set back on May 19, 2010 against the Dodgers.

6.1:

Cahill’s no-hit bid was not the longest of his career. That took place back on April 12, 2009 when he was a member of the Oakland Athletics. In that contest, Adrian Beltre ended the bid with a one-out single in the sixth inning.

10:

Didi Gregorius put an end to Arizona’s season-high 10 game errorless streak in the second inning after his errant throw drew Mark Trumbo off the bag at first.

27:

Cahill’s 27 pitches through three innings were tied for a career-high fewest in that span.
