GLENDALE, Ariz. — It may be “Camp Cupcake,” but at least one hair has been found baked inside what should have been a tasty pastry.

Eww.

The Arizona Cardinals had been dealing with their fair share of injuries early in camp, most of which were related to hamstrings and not considered to be all that serious.

However, receiver Michael Floyd left practice early Wednesday, and though there have been conflicting reports as to the severity of his injury, chances are he won’t be back on the field soon.

That’s the big story to come out of Wednesday’s afternoon practice, and with the team off Thursday, there’s a good chance we won’t hear anything official until Friday.

The Good

Carson Palmer was back on the field and let’s just say there is a noticeable difference in the quality of play when No. 3 is out there. He had a nice long TD pass to a wide-open John Brown on one play during 11-on-11, as well as a host of other throws that saw him put excellent touch and/or accuracy to fit the ball into tight spaces.

Rookie receiver J.J. Nelson made a leaping catch along the sideline to snare a Chandler Harnish pass.

Safety Brandon Person dove in front a receiver to break up a Phillip Sims pass late in practice.

The Bad

Obviously Floyd’s injury leads the list, and by a wide margin. He was not the only Cardinal to go down Wednesday, though, as lineman John Fullington was carted off the field after suffering what appeared to be a left knee injury.

Sims did not appear to have his best day on the field. His reads weren’t necessarily bad, just too many throws ended up on the ground.

Darren Fells dropped at least one pass he should have caught. Ifeanyi Momah and Gannon Sinclair also had some issues holding onto catchable passes.

Kicker Chandler Catanzaro had been good in camp, though he had a rough go of it Wednesday missing three straight field goals at one point. Now, two of them were from 50-yards out, but still, not his best work.

A few Cardinals defenders received some colorful language from coach Bruce Arians after they tackled a bit too aggressively in some plays.

Notable

Backup QB Drew Stanton had a scheduled day off, meaning Logan Thomas got the bulk of the second-team reps. Locked in a battle for the third QB job, Thomas appears to be doing a solid job of making his case. Chandler Harnish was the third QB in the pecking order Wednesday.

Speaking of the quarterbacks, they appeared to be doing more work out of the shotgun than they have so far.

Kerwynn Williams once again was the team’s starting RB, as Andre Ellington and David Johnson continued to sit with hamstring injuries.

Gannon Sinclair was the third TE, along with Fells and Momah, in three tight end sets.

Quotable

“I think so.  I won’t admit that to them, but I understand what their thinking is.  You got to stay in your lane.  You got to do what you do, know what you know and leave medical decisions to the experts that we have.” – Carson Palmer on if his scheduled day off Tuesday was helpful

“No, I haven’t.  It’s a remarkable story that he can play quarterback with his vision.  I was one of those ones like, if we fix it, (expletive) he might see a lot of (expletive) that he don’t want to see.  All them guys coming after him.  Like he said, he’s used to it, so maybe we’ll fix  it later.” – Bruce Arians on if he’s ever had a QB with the kind of vision problems Phillip Sims has

“You always want to seize every opportunity and try to make the best of every opportunity presented in front of you, so I’m just trying to make the best of the extra time that I’m getting.” – Kerwynn Williams on receiving first-team reps with Andre Ellington and David Johnson sidelined

A highlight because those are fun

Up Next

The Cardinals have Thursday off before getting back on the field Friday. They will have a walkthrough in the morning and then their usual 2 p.m. practice in the afternoon.
