Cardinals’ Colt McCoy in concussion protocol after loss to Broncos

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Colt McCoy is in concussion protocol after leaving in the third quarter of the team’s Week 15 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday, head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters postgame.

“You never like to see that,” Kingsbury told reporters postgame. “It was a tough impact going out there seeing him like that but talking to our trainers I think he’s doing better, so that’s good.”

“He was doing better as he got into the locker room,” the head coach added when talking with Cardinals sideline reporter Paul Calvisi after the game.

The signal caller went down during the Cardinals’ opening drive of the second half on a designed run. He was visibly in pain before eventually walking off the field with trainers despite a cart coming out for the QB.

McCoy exited the matchup after completing 13 of his 21 throws (61.9%) for 78 yards and an interception. He was also sacked twice.

In place of McCoy was third-string QB Trace McSorley, who threw for 95 yards and two interceptions on 7-of-15 passing.

McSorley entered the matchup with 14 passing attempts under his belt in 2022, completing 57.1% of those throws (eight) for 71 yards and an interception. He also had four carries for 26 yards.

If McCoy is unable to go next week, McSorley would be the next in line to start for Arizona, with David Blough and Carson Strong (practice squad) also potential fill-ins if need be.

“We’ll try to adapt to what we think he does best,” Kingsbury said postgame. “If he gets a week this week — not how it’s going to play out — but we’ll put in a few things that he likes and is comfortable with.”

Adding to the injury woes was starting right tackle Kelvin Beachum, who was also injured on the same play as McCoy. The lineman was questionable with knee and ankle injuries but eventually returned.

Taking over for Beachum was Cody Ford, who has been used primarily used at guard since coming over from the Buffalo Bills via trade this past offseason.
