Dillon Brooks to sign extension with Suns, becoming long-term piece

Dillon Brooks not only earned credit for the Phoenix Suns’ cultural turnaround. His 2025-26 season was his best of his nine-year professional career.

For that, the Suns and Brooks agreed to a three-year, $73 million contract extension on Wednesday, reports ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro added the deal is fully guaranteed with the first year set to make Brooks just upwards of $22 million.

The 30-year-old averaged 20.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists for the 45-win team, giving an unexpected punch to a Phoenix roster that was expected to be led offensively by Devin Booker and Jalen Green.

Brooks joins Booker, Collin Gillespie, Khaman Maluach, Jordan Goodwin, Rasheer Fleming, Koa Peat and Mark Williams as players under team control beyond the 2027-28 season. Miles Bridges is entering the final year of his deal and is extension-eligible.

While Booker (26.1 points per game) and Green (17.8) managed injuries and combined for just 96 games between them, Brooks helped them surpass preseason expectations early on. A hand injury out of the All-Star break sidelined Brooks for much of the second half of the regular season.

Brooks, despite playing in only 56 games himself, notably led the NBA with 17 technical fouls in the regular season, earning suspensions because of the total.

His agitator role as the self-proclaimed villain returned as the Suns earned a play-in victory that set up a four-game sweep at the hands of the Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round. Brooks played well in that series despite Phoenix’s struggles, averaging 26 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting 46% overall and 44% from three — all while pestering fellow Canadian Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Acquired from the Houston Rockets in the Kevin Durant trade last offseason, Brooks was entering 2026-27 on the final year of his contract and set to make $21 million.

A looming extension was foreshadowed in the middle of Brooks’ first year as the Suns attempted to move on from a superteam and into a new era under general manager Brian Gregory.

Suns owner Mat Ishbia declared in January that Brooks wasn’t going anywhere at the trade deadline or beyond.

“Don’t bother calling … Suns aren’t interested (in a trade),” Ishbia said on X in response to former NBA player Boogie Cousins proposing a swap that would have sent Brooks to the Los Angeles Lakers. “Dillon’s not going anywhere.”
